The Difference Between Punching in Muay Thai & Boxing

Joining boxing gyms Sydney to learn Muay Thai is a good idea.Students while learning Muay Thai often get confused about punching techniques, particularly when they get prepare in both disciplines or they had previous coaches who adopted a western boxing style in their way to teach Muay Thai we learn them best techniques in Muay Thai.

Western boxing is totally different to fighting Thai.  Standing, hand positions and body movements, all changes. As a result, punching techniques change as well.
Below is a link of connection of one of the best Muay Thai coaches from a gym in Bangkok. Their fight style is specialized due to very strong boxing but, as we will notice from the video, the difference between the traditional western boxing and the Thai style of punching is quite different. Some of their differences are mentioned below:

·      Punches most of the times are very strong in the first attempt. Traditional Muay Thai boxing system often follow compact and short punching. When the two fighters are close to each other, it’s more effective to use elbow techniques.
·        Very small foot pivoting, even with the help of hooks.
·      Turning the knuckles in inward position for hooks while traditional boxing often has knuckled in downward position.

·      In western boxing having active head movements is basic rule to avoid getting hit, for Muay Thai fighters it can be dangerous to have too much upper body movement, not only because boxers can run into knees etc but also weakens bodydefense against kicks. If you are looking for local gyms for Muay Thai Sydney, I will suggest the Eight Limbs as the best option to choose.

There are exceptions obviously. A lot of boxers, especially in modern boxing, use strong punches and long guard also while some of the Thai boxers adopt a more compact western style of punching available at our boxing gyms Sydney.
